How to Apply

Deadlines

The university application process starts in the fall of the year before you intend to begin your studies. Check the link below for a list of application and document deadlines. It’s always best to submit your application and supporting documents well in advance of posted deadlines as spaces can fill quickly. Admission decisions are released between January and late May. 

Approximately one week after we receive your application, we will send you an email acknowledgement with instructions on how to activate your JOINid. The email will also include your University of Toronto applicant number and complete details on next steps in the application process.

U of T Sponsored Application

Fee Waivers

The University of Toronto is committed to dismantling barriers to postsecondary education. One of the ways we are doing so is with the U of T Sponsored Application Pilot Program for domestic students. This program is delivered in partnership with local community groups, including Visions of Science, the East Scarborough Boys & Girls Club, and Girls E-Mentorship. Frequently Asked Questions About Applying

  • How many U of T programs can I apply to?

    You can apply to one admission category per academic division up to three times. An admission category is simply a cluster of related programs (e.g., at the application stage, you would apply to “Life Sciences” rather than a specific program within the Life Sciences). Our seven direct-entry academic divisions are the Faculty of Arts & Science, the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, the Faculty of Music, the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, U of T Mississauga, and U of T Scarborough.

  • Are applicants required to submit personal essays, reference letters, or portfolios?

    If your program requires supplemental materials, this will be noted in your JOIN portal at join.utoronto.ca (or in your Engineering Applicant Portal). While some programs require supplemental applications or profiles, most of our programs do not. Please note that essays and letters of reference will not be considered unless we specifically request them. Should supplemental materials be required for one of your target programs, you’ll be notified after you’ve submitted your application.

  • I need to take a course in summer school. Will this put me at a disadvantage when I apply?

    The University of Toronto does not discriminate between courses taken in a day school and those taken in summer school, night school, or accredited online programs—all of these are considered equivalent so long as they are taken through a school that is formally approved by your province’s Ministry of Education. Students applying to the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering may be asked to provide reasoning for taking a course outside of their normal day school if the course is available in their day school.

  • I’m applying from outside of Canada. What are my admission requirements?

    The University of Toronto welcomes applications from students in over 160 countries and territories around the world. If you are currently studying outside Canada—or if your most recent academic experience was outside Canada—and if you would like to view our minimal requirements from your region or educational system, please visit our International Admission Requirements and navigate to the country/curriculum of your most recent studies.
